Inputs
Raises and decreases are a flat percentage of the Year 1 salary, not compounding — and the CBA caps them at 8%.
How this works
NBA raises and decreases are flat: the dollar step is a percentage of the Year 1 salary and then repeats unchanged every season.
Under the 2023 CBA the step is capped at 8% of Year 1 for extensions and re-signings using Bird rights, and 5% otherwise. Anything above 8% is flagged above.
Total contract value is the sum of the seasons; average per year is that total divided by the number of seasons, which is the number usually quoted in a headline.
Worked example — $23,000,000 over 4 years, 5% annual decrease
| Year | Season | Salary | Change vs Prior Yr |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2026–27 | $23,000,000 | — |
| 2 | 2027–28 | $21,850,000 | -$1,150,000 |
| 3 | 2028–29 | $20,700,000 | -$1,150,000 |
| 4 | 2029–30 | $19,550,000 | -$1,150,000 |
